I’m sure you’ve all seen the video by now. After all, it went viral within hours, garnering national and international attention for both Holbeach United and their goalkeeper Ricky Drury. But it’s so good, it’s worth watching again and again!
Goalscoring goalkeepers are one of my favourite things in football, as they usually mean dramatic equalisers and winners. Jimmy Glass, anyone?
If you’ve been on the moon since the weekend, you might not be aware of Ricky Drury’s last gasp equaliser for United Counties Premier Division side Holbeach United against National League North outfit Worcester City. Into added time, City were winning 1-0 in their FA Cup Second Qualifying Round tie. Drury embarked on his infamous excursion upfield after Holbeach were awarded a freekick, thinking he was going to be taking the set piece. However, he was beckoned into the penalty area, and unbelievably scored an incredible overhead kick to spark wild scenes of celebration on and off the pitch.
Unfortunately for Drury and Holbeach, they lost the replay 2-0, although the keeper had a fine game, making a string of saves to keep the scoreline down.
Relive the moment with this video, from Worcester City’s youtube channel:
Whether Holbeach are sanctioned for the fans invading the pitch remains to be seen. The FA can’t be that big a set of killjoys can they?
